How to Overcome Anxiety During Exams

Feeling nervous before an exam is common. The aim is not to eliminate every worry, but to use practical routines that make preparation and the examination itself more manageable.

Make uncertainty smaller

Replace vague goals such as “study everything” with a list of specific chapters or skills. Practise the kinds of questions you expect and check answers against reliable materials.

When revision reveals a gap, decide on one next action: revisit a worked example, ask a teacher or practise three similar questions.

Use short calming routines

Before studying or entering the examination room, try a few slow, comfortable breaths and relax your shoulders. Put your attention on the question in front of you rather than predicting an outcome.

Aim for regular sleep and meals, and include movement and breaks while revising. Long hours of exhausted study are often less useful than shorter focused sessions.

Respond constructively during the exam

Read instructions fully, start with a question you understand and watch your time. If your thoughts stall, mark the question, move forward and return later.

Talk with a trusted teacher, family member or qualified professional if worry becomes persistent or interferes with daily life. Asking for support is a practical part of preparation.

Practical checklist
